BFF’s??? Possibly

I love the fact that I am Little Lady’s best friend. Even when she is cross with me, the worst thing she can say is “you’re not my best friend anymore!” So I can still be her friend, just not her best friend! I think I can cope with that!

At the beginning of the week I was lucky enough to get this

A handmade picture of me and little lady in a heart, standing next to a ginormous flower and she is saying to me “I love you” 😀 how lovely is that?

So after reading about team Pugh’s Acts of Kindness I decided I would write her a note back. It makes me smile so much when I get a note like that, that I wanted to make little lady smile too.

So while she was in school I wrote her a note complete with a very lifelike(!) picture of the two of us

And left it on her bed.

Later she came home from school and asked to play upstairs. A couple of minutes later little lady called down the stairs:
“Mam, you know this note on my bed?”
*smiling smugly* “yes sweety”
“You did it wrong!”
*jaw drops to the floor* “what?”
“You didn’t draw a flower on it and I like flowers”
“Don’t you think it was a nice note though?”
“Well you didn’t draw a flower on it!” *throws note down the stairs* “you’ve got to put a flower on it cos I like flowers”

A well and truly told off mammy duly drew a flower on the note and sent it back upstairs for approval!

Moral of the story – you can’t please 6 year olds 😉

Craft room progress

We have been very busy here lately. I’m excited to say its because we have been decluttering. Oh my deary me, you won’t believe the amount of stuff I have sorted through!! We have started in the attic in a bid to make some space in order to move other stuff (like my craft things) up into the attic.

I mentioned here that I would like a craft space in the attic. I would ideally like space for a table for my sewing machine, and storage for all my bits and bobs. However, I have sooooo much stuff it’s unbelievable. I’m not sure if I have shown you this picture before but I actually find it embarrassing that I have so much stuff.

That is only my fabric stash. That doesn’t include all the other bits and pieces I have 😮

Hubby and I have spent 2 full days up in the attic together and hubby has spent an extra day on his own up there, and it is starting to come together nicely. I have thrown away anything that has no use, bagged up some crafty things for little lady’s school, donated items to the charity shop, given fabric to friends and made a pile of unusable scraps that can be used as stuffing. I was physically and emotionally exhausted!

But!! Most of my bits and pieces are organised into drawers,

My table is up and it is much cleaner, lighter and brighter than before.

My fabric has been sorted through but I still need to organise it.

It’s not quite there yet but it is getting there and I am so excited! It’s not the spacious, light filled studio I always imagined but it’s mine, it’s big enough and I will take that! Hubby is planning to rearrange the lighting and run an extension lead for power. I also plan to ask for daylight lamps/bulbs for my birthday to make sure the light is adequate.

I am so excited by this you can’t believe. And the fabric I have rediscovered is amazing! I can’t wait to get up there and get stuck in! 😀

Virtual Running

So I have my first running medal of the year. Yay!!

It was for running a 5k virtual race. Yes a virtual race sounds easy doesn’t it? That’s what I thought when I first heard about it through twitter. The lady who organises it can be found on twitter @VirtualRunneruk or you can go to her website to read all about it. Basically you pay the entry fee for the month (in this case January) and then you have to complete your race between specific dates. You can run anywhere, anytime. Then you tweet or email your proof to claim your medal.

I chose to run my race at parkrun. For once I left little lady at home (in bed no less) and went to parkrun on my own. I’m pleased to say I smashed my PB by over a minute and I ran the whole way! No stopping or walking!!!

I was so pleased, although I did feel silly trying to take a selfie straight after the race to send as proof alongside the above photo.

Not my favourite picture I have to admit with my chubby face!!

I was very impressed with both the speed of the arrival of the medal and the quality of the medal itself. It is actually really heavy! It’s also engraved on the back.

Having the virtual race to aim for has really helped me to stick to my training plan (ie actually run during the week) and it’s really convenient as a lot of races are on a Sunday which makes it difficult for me with church.

I have signed myself up to the February virtual race and am really looking forward to getting a new PB 😉

Made it Monday #2

Well I have been busy this week. I had two birthday girls that needed presents. The first birthday girl was a very big 2 and the second was just slightly older at 60 😉 In light of trying to declutter and not spend money, both presents were made from items I already had (gosh I hope they are not reading this as it makes me sound a bit cheap!) lots of love and time went into both though.

The first present to be finished and wrapped was this one

A hanging heart filled with stuffing and a sprinkling of home grown (well from my mum’s garden anyway) lavender.

The second present was a personalised hair clip tidy. It has ribbons hanging down to enable hair clips to be clipped onto so that they don’t get lost. Something that always happens in our house.

The picture isn’t great as I had to get a picture before I wrapped it and the light was fading by that point.

Both presents were a hit and that’s always a relief especially when they are handmade. I do worry that I look cheap when giving handmade presents. Which is a bit silly really as I LOVE getting handmade items!

I’ll leave you to guess which present went to which birthday girl 😉

I will love you and leave you as this post is already a day late. Oops.

Make It Monday

One of my resolutions goals for this year is to sew more, and over on the creative pixie’s blog, Jean is running a Make It Monday feature. She is doing it slightly differently to me as I would like to use it to show things that I have made. Maybe I should call it Made It Monday instead, hmm?

So today is the first Monday in January and the first “here’s one I made earlier”.

Before the Christmas holidays, little lady brought a letter home from school asking for various items for the play shops they are making/running as part of their social learning. We didn’t have any of the items on the list to donate and, as money is a bit tight, I didn’t really want to go out and buy anything, so I pondered pretty much the entire holiday, wondering what to do.

One of the shops in the “village” is a cafe and the cafe needed placemats, so I decided to make some using fabric from my stash, therefore decluttering at the same time *polishes halo* 😀 I stamped the word Caffi (welsh for Cafe) in one of the corners to make it a bit more interesting and top stitched around the edge. Pretty simple but effective.

Starting a new page

Happy New Year.

We celebrated last night with a Chinese takeaway and a Peppa Pig DVD 😉 Oh the joy of being outvoted by a 2 year old! We didn’t stay up. We very rarely do to be honest. New year isn’t that big a deal for us. We don’t go out and we don’t really make resolutions either. We do, however, make a list of things that we want to achieve over the coming year and I suppose that is pretty much the same thing.

Last year I made a list on here of about 5 things I wanted to achieve. Out of the 5 I achieved 3! I didn’t manage to make D some curtains for his bedroom, neither did I re-cover our settees. I did, however, embroider the 2nd curtain and get the fireplace finished. You can see both in this post here. We also grew, and harvested, a lot more veg than we did in 2012. We stuck to growing the same things, with the exception of attempting bell peppers, and had a good harvest.

This year I would like to:

  1. Sew a lot more. I am hoping to get the attic sorted out soon enough for my craft space to become a reality. I would like to make more of my own clothes and also clothes for Little Lady and baby D. Hubby has a lot of clothes and wears either a uniformed polo shirt and shorts or wet/dry suit for work so I’m not planning to involve him yet. Which brings me to a big one….
  2. During 2014 I am planning to not buy any new clothes for myself and only a small amount for the kiddies. Exceptions include; underwear and shoes. I will not skimp on shoes for the little ones and the thought of second hand underwear……well let’s not go there!!
  3. Running. I want to improve my running and I have my eye on a few races I would like to sign up for over the coming year. Starting off I have a 5k Virtual Race in January. (More to come on that later on in the month) I have also set myself a target of 500km total over the year. This is to try to get me to go running more often. I have set up my runkeeper app to count every run I do from today to the 31st December.
  4. Curtains for baby D’s room. I have seen fabric that I like and plan to order it asap. We have taken D’s cot away and he’s sleeping in a big boy’s bed now so it’ll be nice for him to have a big boy’s room too.
  5. Continue in the garden. We acquired 5 blackcurrant bushes to add to the fruit trees we already have. I want to plant more and use the harvest to make a lot of our food from scratch.
  6. Decluttering and sorting. Ruthlessly. I really really want my craft/office space in the attic so I really need to get my bum in gear with this one. It will be a long slog as not only do we have a lot of stuff in the attic, but the spare room soon to be play room, has a lot of stuff in it, as does the space under the stairs. Our house is almost bursting with stuff, and we need to continue the work we started, and abandoned, pretty much this time last year!

I hope you will join me in 2014 and let’s see if I can do better than the 3/5 I achieved last year.
